Instructor Spotlight: Phyllis Kirkland

Phyllis Kirkland Hey friends,

My name is Phyllis Kirkland. I am a semi-retired teacher who began my fitness journey in 2019, before retirement, because I wanted to lose weight and get healthier, and the gym was conveniently located near my home. When I began, my range of motion was limited.  My strength was on the weak side, and I was certainly not capable of some of the exercises. However, standing in the back of the room behind everyone else, I chose to press on because my health is very important to me. I did lose weight, I began to be able to exercise body parts that I couldn’t before, and most of all, I felt better about myself, not just physically but mentally as well.

Was it easy for me to get to the gym every day after working all day? No! Not always. I set my mind to the goal I had set for myself, which, by the way, is now more focused on strength and endurance rather than weight. I always remember how much better I feel, both inside and out, after I go, and it keeps me focused on the prize. I am 70 years old now, and 3 years ago, I held the record for a 4-minute plank against the younger ladies in my class!

Determination is the key!

I ride my bike to the gym, I take no medications other than vitamins, and I’m excited to help others reach their goals. My class is for all ages; 30-45 minute cardio with dumbbells and some yoga stretching. We offer weights of 3lb and above, or you can start with body weight only. As your muscles get stronger, you’ll be able to take on more weight. Anything we do can be modified for your needs, even in a chair.  You may start with modifications, and when your strength is heightened, you’ll realize you might not need those modifications.

If you keep saying, “I need to,” you will never do it. I’m proof that taking that first step to the gym with a mindset on your health can help you reach your goals, whatever they might be.  I know that money for gym fees can also be an excuse if you let it.  I also focused on that. If I pay, then I’m going to go and get my money’s worth!  

We offer several classes to choose from, and you can attend any or all of them for one fee. We continually collaborate to develop innovative ideas that enhance your experience and enjoyment while you work on yourself. I challenge young and older, small and large, to take that first step for YOU! It’s free for that first class. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain! And we support a Diboll small business and community!
